About Rafiki

Who is Rafiki?
Rafiki is a small doll. He travels all over the world meeting children. He also goes into Swedish schools telling children what it is like to be a child in other countries. Rafiki mostly talks about life in developing countries, since those countries are unknown to many Swedish people. Rafiki's message is that children are all equal and have the same value.

What is Rafiki?
Rafiki is an Information Program from Erikshjälpen and IM/Individuell Människohjälp, two Swedish NGOs.

The Overarching Goal of Rafiki:
To give as many people as possible quality of life and the prospects needed to function and develop decent conditions of living.
Both Erikshjälpen and IM are actively engaged in the global Millennium Goals, providing all children with education by 2015 and to halve poverty in the world by 2020. We have joined together in advocacy for children's issues. We are working to implement the UN’s Convention on the Right of Children, which permeates our operations.

The idea of Rafiki?
The Rafiki Information Program, presents facts. We want to clear up misunderstandings and give a fair picture of the world. But we don't only help young people acquire knowledge. We also show how to use the knowledge. Rafiki gives children experiences and learning that will last for a lifetime. Values developed when you are young don't change over the years.

Swedish school aged children are given the possibility to:

* increase their knowledge about other children's life conditions
* see similaries for children all over the world
* realise that it is possible to change conditions through action

This leads to having more people in Sweden with understanding of other people in our world and an openness to engage in development programs. These people will have a ready-to-act attitude because they have already been taking actions to assist people. Of course this also gives a better understanding of the different people living in Sweden.

The work of Rafiki?
The Rafiki Information Program addresses children and youth living in Sweden.
The Rafiki magazine, website, doll and Rafiki journey experience are used as mediums of communication. Rafiki works with themes concerning children's lives in different countries. Rafiki also has information champions, who are in charge of the contacts with the schools. Together with the Rafiki doll, the informants visit schools where they hold lessons about children in the world, allowing them to experience the world in their classroom, inspiring children to take part in projects.

To schools that want to take an active part in a concrete project while studying the world there are several possibilities. Contact is facilitated to schools or projects around the world. All projects are small parts of the development work of Erikshjälpen and IM. These projects all benefit children and are designed so the effects can be easy visible for children in Sweden.
All projects are run due of the needs in developing countries. For Rafiki it is important that support to people is on the terms of the supported people. It's about respect and long-time co-operation.
